The worst of ABBA | 2 December 2007
Not every ABBA song is a jewel. In fact, ABBA made a couple of very weak songs. Oddly there is one on every album. Take for instance the Ring Ring album. This album is not by the standards that we've become accustomed to with later albums. Because quite frankly there are a couple of ABBA's worst recordings: I Saw It In The Mirror is one of them. In general this is considered ABBA's weakest performance on record. And rightly so. It sounds like a demo, the singing is a buit messy and the melody is not exactly catchy. Or what About I Am Just A Girl? Not one of ABBA's masterpieces either. The laid back vocals become very irritating after a while. Also the next albums contain terrible tracks and most of these drama songs are ABBA's ballads: Dance (While The Music Still Goes On) is such a disaster track. When you hear it, you would almost hope that ABBA stopped recording then. Bang A Boomerang, lifted from the album ABBA, is another light weight song. A shitty title, a dreadful lyric and it's a song that doesn't fit in with superior tracks on the album like So Long, SOS en Mamma Mia. Even the heavenly The Album has at least one bad song: In my mind Move On is more a joke than a true ABBA song. I also have my doubts with Thank You For The Music. Not that it's such a terrible song, but I don't like it to have become a kind of trademark ABBA track. ABBA did so much better than that mediocre song. The same applies to I Have A Dream from the Voulez-Vous LP. Together with If It Wasn't For The Nights it's right in the top 10 of weakest ABBA links. Imagine that I Have A Dream has in fact been a number One song in many charts. That's quite a horrible thought, right? On Super Trouper it's Andante, Andante and on The Visitors its' Soldiers and Two For The Price Of One who are the bad ones. In all honesty I have to admit that although these are not my favourites, they are by far superior to most of the songs on Ring Ring. I think it would be a humorous idea if there would be a "The Worst Of ABBA" CD. Could this be an idea for Universal maybe? They want to release a new compilation every year, so this could be a new approach. I bet that even this CD would be sold to thousands of hard core fans. |
